Restaurant-Style Sweet Corn Soup in 20 Minutes
The comforting Indo-Chinese classic — thick, glossy, unmistakably sweet — cooked at home with D-O-N Sweet Corn Powder for concentrated corn flavour.

Every Indian growing up in the 90s has a version of sweet corn soup imprinted on their memory — the mildly sweet, gently peppery, unmistakably glossy soup that turned up at every roadside Chinese cart and family restaurant. It is the ultimate rainy-day comfort, kid-friendly, and one of the easiest 'restaurant' dishes to make well at home.
The secret restaurants never tell you is that they double the corn — half goes in as sweet corn kernels for the bite, the other half as a purée for the thickness. At home, D-O-N Sweet Corn Powder makes that shortcut foolproof: a spoon of the powder whisks into the broth and delivers a naturally sweet, deeply corny base without any thickener paste needed.
This version keeps everything you love (silky texture, gentle sweetness, cracked pepper on top) and quietly removes what you don't (MSG, sugar syrup, corn flour thickeners you can taste).
Method
- 01Build the base
Melt butter in a pot. Add D-O-N Garlic and Ginger Powders and cook for 20 seconds — you want fragrance, not colour. Whisk in D-O-N Sweet Corn Powder with 1 cup of the stock until smooth.
- 02Simmer the soup
Pour in the rest of the stock. Add sweet corn kernels, carrot and cabbage. Bring to a gentle simmer and cook for 8 minutes until the vegetables are just tender.
- 03Thicken and season
Whisk the corn-flour slurry and stream it into the simmering soup while stirring — it will thicken to a glossy sheen in about 60 seconds. Add soy sauce, vinegar, salt and pepper. Taste and add sugar only if needed.
- 04Optional egg finish
Turn heat to lowest. Pour beaten egg white in a thin stream while stirring gently — it will bloom into pretty white ribbons. Serve very hot with spring onion greens and chillies-in-vinegar on the side.
Tips from our kitchen
- For a creamier soup, replace 1 cup of stock with 1 cup of milk (add at the end, off heat).
- Kids love an extra spoon of sweet corn kernels — add half a cup more.
- Store leftovers with the corn-flour slurry undiluted; reheat gently or the shine will break.
Frequently asked questions
Is D-O-N Sweet Corn Powder different from cornflour?+
Yes — corn flour is a starch used to thicken. D-O-N Sweet Corn Powder is whole sweet corn kernels, gently dehydrated, giving you flavour and nutrition, not just body.
Can I skip the egg?+
Absolutely. The soup is delicious without it — just add a splash of milk or cream for the same silky look.
Is this soup healthy?+
This home version has no MSG, no maida-based thickener and half the sugar of restaurant soup. Warm, wholesome and kid-friendly.
